So there would be no diesel fuel or gas or electricity, but plenty of coal?
Doesn't have to be coal they burn though does it, even though it's the most efficient?

I'm sure Asda will sell firelighters which will do the job ;-)
The rest of the myth is (usually) that they are hidden in disused tunnels/mines in Wiltshire.
Not true - there used to be loads of steam engines in (I think) Barry Island, but they were owned by a scrap merchant who was taking his time cutting them up.
There are loads of steam trains, not hidden away though but running on rails - all those steam railways that people like to visit.
There used to be a Locomotive graveyard somewhere near Barry Island, I saw it about 1980, I think its gone now, but i'm not sure.
It is true (well that the myth exists is true, though the myth itself is a myth).

Well I can lay that one to rest, thank you all very much.
Dai Woodham's scrapyard, Barry, took the great majority of ex-BR steam locos. He made a HUGE amount of money selling off loads of them for restoration/preservation; the remainder were cut up for scrap.
