Most people believe that an egg is just a chicken's way of ensuring that there will be more chickens, but - in reality - a chicken is just a way for an egg to ensure that there will be more eggs!
In the same way, we are here to ensure, as best we can, that our genes go on surviving, modifying and developing. In other words, we exist to procreate. That's not to say we cannot be moral and benevolent to others as well, of course.
Religious people will doubtless turn up here claiming we are here to worship a God and to save our souls for an eternal life.
Take your pick!
Have a read of 'A Short History of Nearly Everything', by Bill Bryson, although it doesn't explain 'why' we are here, as we were created out of nothing.

As QM says, religious people will say God created everything, but then come the eternal question, 'where did God come from?'.

A truth, Once there was nothing, then there was something.
We are here to work, pay taxes and die (in that order)
From ''Always look on the bright side of life''--You came from nothing ,you're going back to nothing, what have you lost ? Nothing.

You fall out of your mother's womb, you crawl across open country under fire, and drop into your grave.
Quentin Crisp

Procreation.
Quizmonster's answer is a bit mixed up, I'm afraid. We exist because God ordered Adam and Eve to go forth and multiply, and having inherited the hang of it from them it's such good fun that none of us can bring ourselves to stop.
whats the theory "that we are here too help the universe, find out why it is there?"
Our purpose in life is to have nice thoughts about Peter Phillips and James Alexandrou
Or do we only exist in our own imaginations
And in the end, does the question matter?
If it's the last thing I do, I'll find out.
I'd listen to Zen
We are here because God made Adam and Eve, made us a world to live in though we don`t seem to be making a good job of looking after it if global warming is getting closer every day. When you see a newborn baby it makes everything seem worthwhile especially if it`s your own. The future not ours to know?
As far as I'm concerned we're here because the molecules of which we are made only exist in the pattern they currently occupy, as this pattern promotes it's continuation.

On the other hand, I tend to find this gets a bit miserable if you keep thinking about it so you may as well just have fun and enjoy the ride.
from a mans perspective,
we spend the first nine months of our life
trying to get out of a womans womb,
and the rest of our adolt lives trying to get
into one.???????
**** knows
It really bugs me when people make light of this question..its far too easy to come up with a silly twee answer. Also it is far to easy to say procreation or passing on ones genes...That doesnt actually answer WHY we are here.To say there is an answer to why we are here implies that we have been put here for a purpose...and to accept we have been put here for a purpose imples an intelligent creator...the answer to why we are here simply does not have an answer if you dont accept the existence of a creator....ps my twee answer is that we are here to support southampton football club...ahem sorry...
we are a hibryd breed of higher inteligent beings and ape, in the bible it talks of angels desending to earth and mating with the women of the earth which doesn't have to mean human it could mean ape, this is why scientists are strugling to find the missing link and the answer to why there aren't any such missing link creatures alive today, highly intelegent people e.g. einstien? are obviously direct decendants of these offspring, look at noah for instance how did he know how to build a boat? especially of such magnitude, who told him to build one? it must have took him months if not years to build so he must have been given a fair bit of warning!
