Kippers in history

Some historians argue that kippers have played a decisive role in major world events. I find this hard to believe. Does anyone know of any authentically documented examples?

The Trojan Horse was a red herring.
Some say the Roman Empire was built on kippers.
Alfred the Great was alleged to have been a kipper whilst he let a peasant womans cakes burn.
Francis Drake is said to have "singed the King of Spain's kipper" when he attacked the port of Cadiz. Nothing like a nice fish supper after a hard day's piracy, eh?
