Frances Giles is an authoritative but entertaining author on medieval history, especially in Britain. The author has written Life in a Medieval City, Life in a Medieval Village, Life in a Medieval Castle, and Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel : Technology and Invention in the Middle Ages... try one, you'll like them all... in my opinion...

But it rather looks like it's out of print now. It's a facinating examination of medieval technology and if you ever thought of the period as technologically backward it's very interesting
