Where does the name 'New Scotland Yard' originate?

Seems funny that the English police are called that, I was just curious about why.

Originally, it came from the fact that, in the Middle Ages, lodgings in this part of Whitehall Palace housed representatives of the Scottish crown.

The English police aren't called that - its the name of the HQ of the Metropolitan Police. They used to be based in offices on a street called Scotland Yard and over the years the HQ became known as Scotland Yard. When they moved to new premises they took the nickname with them but added New.

That's my understanding anyway!
