At the outbreak of the Spanish civil war (1936), Majorca and Ibiza were seized by Insurgent forcesMajorca becoming a base of the Italian fleetwhile Minorca remained in the hands of the Loyalists until 1939.
How remarkable that tiny Menorca withstood the might of Franco and the Italian Airforce on its doorstep, Especially when you consider how important Mahn harbour might have been.

Was it self-sufficient or supplied from the Republican mainland?

I have my own copy of Hugh Thomas' "The Spanish Civil War", but it barerly mentions the Balearics at all. It does just mention that at the very end HMS Devonshire evacuated the most vulnerable Republican stalwarts who would otherwise have faced torture and certain death at El Caudillo's merciful hands.
