Disney is very pro-animal, if you haven't noticed! 2) I once heard that every Disney movie (that Walt Disney personally directed) had to include one sad / touching / moving moment, because Disney believed that the emotional highs of the movie (the happy parts) would be felt / experienced more strongly by the audience if they were preceded by an emotional low (a sad part). Almost every Disney movie ever made follows that formula. You must admit, it works. I will try to find an online source for that statement as well, though my mother has also heard it and swears it is common knowledge.
I saw a programme about Disney recently, which talked about the scene with bambi's mum. It said something like only 2 disney films (excluding computer animated stuff) have ever featured a main character with both parents alive. It was apparently part of Walt's formula for films, designed to make the audience feel emotion for the characters. There was always concern people wouldn't relate to full length film animation, so they had to make it dramatic.
The original version was a lot more violent and showed blood. But you'll be relieved to know it was decided that it wouldn't be appropriate. If it's still troubling you and keeps you awake at night, you can always think it could have been a tranquiliser dart not a bullet, and bambi's mum now lives happily in a zoo somewhere!
