'The Dark Valley'
Has anyone read this:
Piers Brendon ; 'The Dark Valley'
Jonathan Cape, Lond. 2000
ISBN 0-224-06038-4
It is subtitled 'A Panorama of the 1930s.'
For me, this is the definitive account of the 'Great
Depression'. Brilliant ++
This book would go with me to the Desert Island,
together with Kipling's poetry and Shakespeare.

It gives an excellent overview of the decade, though other books might give a better account of specific events (e.g. I also have Philip Ziegler's book on Edward VIII and I got Anthony Beevor's book on the Spanish Civil War for a Christmas present last year).
Glad you are enjoying it. If you want to extend your historical reading to the post-war period, might I recommend Peter Hennessy's books Never Again (the 1945-51 period) published a few years ago, and Having it so good (1951-60) which was published around the end of last year.
