Johnny Appleseed was an American frontiersman who appears in many American folk tales. He became famous for his generosity and kindness to animals as well as his tree planting. His real name was John Chapman, and he lived from 1774 to 1845. He was born in Massachusetts, but when he was about 26 he moved to Ohio. It was in Ohio that he started planting apple trees. When settlers began to move West, Johnny moved West ahead of them, planting apple trees as he went, thus preparing the wilderness before their arrival with fruit trees. He eventually settled in Indiana around 1828 and spent the rest of his life there.
