agreed, Paddywak, but I read somewhere it was originally not Waterloo at all - something like Liverpool Sunset, I think... allegedly named after Terence Stamp and Julie Christie in Far from the Madding Crowd

The first (and last) verse is used in the film with Anthony Andrews as Sir Percy.

I haven't heard that one Jno, but in his autobiography X-ray, he tells that the original inspiration came from an incident which occurred while he was hospitalised as a child. In the BBC program the Davis Diaries he refused to say who "Terry and Julie" were as they were still good friends. He also told how after he'd finished writing the song he made his wife drive to Waterloo Bridge just to feel the atmosphere, and that "no song had ever been such a pleasure to work on as that one"
