can anyone direct me towards sites where newpapers can be read on line. My interests are mainly 1940's and 50's.

I don't think many papers have digitised their archives in this way (it's a huge job). Most of what you'll find online just covers the period since they set up their websites. This site should take you to newspaper sites generally:

The Guardian and Observor have digitized a lot of their archive here:

The archive currently covers the period of 1821-1975 for the Guardian and 1900-1975 for the Observer

Searching is free of charge but you do have to pay for other things like viewing full articles or printing.

The British Library in London has a HUGE collection of Newspapers (the building is well worth a visit anyway).

The Times digital archive is available free of charge, but only at public libraries (this is not currently available for home use). The Guardian/Observer facility (mentioned by vehelpfulguy above) can be accessed at home, but there is a charge. You can buy subscriptions by day, month, year, etc.
