What were some of the methos by which the United States expanded its economic and political influence around the world in the late 1800s and early 1900s? How did economic interests sometimes lead to military action?

I have been wondering if someone else would repy as i was just going to mention San Juan Hill and the Spanish.
I think they also intervened in the dispute between Venezuela and the UK over the Western boundary of Guyana. There was a real chance that Britain would have gained possession of a relatively large piece of territory until Teddy Roosevelt stuck his oar in.
