The continued popularity of the AB would rather contradict your approach here.A lot of people prefer a 'human' response, especially where a large proportion of questions invite opinion and debate, rather than simple factual answers. If your argument was valid, then our esteemed Quizmonster could field all the answers single-handed, and i am sure he would be the first to agree, that invaluable as his bottomless list of websites is to all of us, it is by no means the be-all and end-all of the breadth of response that can be obtained by posting here. In fact, your own Question could not be answered by Google, which rather leaves you hoist by your own petard!

Some questions require and understanding of context and may result in a huge number of irrelevent hits. For example I wanted to know what the origing of the name 'press' for a chimney side cupboad were......let me know how long it took to find on google and I'll tell you if the answer is right.

Surely the fact that you found the Google answer to Hamish's 'press' question right here on AB amply answers your question, Bupf. I myself just did a rapid google using press+cupboard and - after 5 fruitless pages - gave up hope of finding the origin, which was what had been asked for. I expect that's pretty much what Hamish did originally. What search criteria did you enter in the slot?

I agree with Andy that people on AnswerBank offer an extremely wide range of expertise and opinion (when that's what's asked for). People here clearly enjoy both asking and answering questions, so you should just leave us to it, if it isn't to your taste. We'd be delighted for you to stay, of course, if you'd prefer!

I often Google questions, but when I have had no luck or not been able to find the correct site, my fellow AB's have not failed me yet and always answer my question sensibly and sympathetically and promptly, they are great and the site is the tops.

recent convert here... found the site by fielding a question on google, i love this it's like a perfect circle isn't it? Anyway loved andy h answer, bupf your a cheeky monkey. but the main reason the site is so cool apart from the fact that it is actually real people asking and answering questions is that it is one massive insight into the workings of the human mind, what tiny and huge ideas pass through us all when we are walking down the street, or forgetting to listen to our friends when we are actually sitting in the pub pretending! or is that just me? anyway you know cool, bupf more questions, stay it will be amusing and ps. why the hell has the AB not yet got a random section please.. now that would be interesting.

football, andy, hamish, quizmonster, p. green, gemag are all soo right. i have asked some very dum question in the past, and some smart aleck would ask me why don't you google it? the same reason i am a masseuse: the human touch. that's what you have here in the answerbank, a bunch of terrific people. as far as i'm concerned, good riddance, but i would not be surprised if we see you back here, and liking it. and you know? you'll be more than welcome into the flock. i think some don't people know a good thing when they see it, but that's okay, everyone makes mistakes.

On a tangent: Has anybody noticed that Google has become less accurate? I always thought it had an almost intuitive search pattern, but these days it's as literal as the rest. Is it since it sold out to big-time advertising?

Sheer bloody laziness!!..to think that Gooogle can lead you to the right conclusions every time is literally a nonsense. To learn you must read books, watch serious docos and ask older people for old things and newer people for new, then add in the webs.. and read and ask many of them and seek and analyse competitive views. This site is not pointless unless you are deaf dumb and blind..aha..don't say it, someone can read it to you..and "dumb", well...instinctively I feel sure most of us answerbankers mumble to ouselves and dribble perhaps... cheers

oh and "football"..the term is "as well as you" PLEASE!! 'GOOD' is an ADJECTIVE ..you cannot properly use an adjective without a noun understood or actual..you must use the (how when where why) "well".."as well as" please write 100 times "Some people cannot use the net as WELL as you('can' is understood ok)
