Why is 26 December known as Boxing Day?

Many many answers The most enduring two - servants were given gift boxes by their masters; and
the poor boxes in church were opened and distributed - are both technically correct, but I don't know which is the original. Another arguable point...when Boxing Day falls on Sunday it should be called St Stephen's Day, because the above activities could not take place on the sabbath.
