Reading, or Newcastle upon Tyne.
Lancaster rates very highly - i assume you can read History there (and you're on the doorstep of the Lake District so get yer walking boots out and prepare to be stunned)
Hi I hope your individual research at history is better than in finding universties. One must also not take suggestions as gospel but explore. I wouldn't mention this column's inquiry if you get to an interview!!..humour. Still you may become brilliant. good luck.
Hi GLOGLO here Hummingbird you must learn not to be so patronising. Thnaks guys for the suggestions. My daughter is already at univeristy and I am told is easily heading for her 1st, I just wondered if her choice was in the top ten as she turned Oxford down. Boo Hoo.
Hi..nothing patronising about me ...did you not read the word read "humour". Glad she is doing well but don't worry she can always change uni's ...some of the great teachers and great minds were not at Oxford and Cambridge and the odd shonk was!..but the old mate system still works ridiculously well, look at Elliot and Hawke and ...a million pommes as well. Some great 'traitors'..principled men, went to the great uni's too so there is a mixed bag when you go looking at "what's best". She can do her arts there and then move for the higher with that success and have the benefit of two or more backgrounds. I have daughters too and berated me for stepping in when the course was overloaded and one place had to be decided...she got it and has been a hardworking success since. Patronise??...my daughters would have ironed me out!!..but as you will see if you follow my letters on Hussein and Religion that I don't mess about. My Hussein letters have twice been pulled..we must not speak truth....truth is fifth column these days. I wonder how the third will go..I suppose someone reading this will protest!!If you go to Uni you have to be prepared to face the unpalatable.Cheers..give her "someone's" best wishes..
As far as I know the way to assess how good a university is, is to look at how they scored at the peer-reviewed Research Assessment Exercise for a particular subject - unfortunately I am not sure where this information is published, but I am sure it is available somewhere. Maybe UCAS have it.
I suggest looking at the whole range, not just selected successes. In actual fact uni's do have a theme and this is what needs consideration. I admire the fact that one particular British university turned out a considerable number of homosexual spies...self indulging men of principle..what else could one ask? At the end of the day the results come from YOU the student, nd the esoteric compulsions of the institution, its facilities to engage the student's inquiring mind and the spirit of the place. The rest is tripe, including the old school tie nonsense..although, I have to admit the OST exists because you know HOW the person views the world, he has been brainwashed ame as you and can be relied upon to behave the way you want..that's a value!.. It has its moments!! Cheers
FWIW, both Cambridge and Oxford students were asked which of the two was the better and they both answered the same: the other one!
