For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ."If" is the operative word here. This is a problem that people who interpret the bible literally have to deal with. Many Christians, however, believe that the creation story is an allegory (not to be taken literally). The Hebrew word for man is Adam and the Hebrew word for life is Eve. The creation narrative was written by unscientific people who had never heard of evolution.
my tuppence worth: what I understand is that eve gave birth to twins (boy & girl)every morning and evening. The pairings were made as the morning boy would wed the evening girl and vice versa. The rest is history. Also, one of the boys liked the girl he was born with and wanted to marry her. When that was not allowed by mum&dad then he threw some tantrum and ended in killing his opposite brother. Hence the first killing over a woman. CLEAR AS MUD!!!!
Ponderer, adam can mean man as in a singular man, but the same word can also mean "humanity/humankind" as a collective. I was just wanting to confirm this and couldn't find my Hebrew dictionary, so I did a wee google search and couldn't believe what I came up with. Someone on their website has tried to argue that "adam" cannot mean "humanity/humankind" as it is written in Genesis with a capital letter and is therefore a person's name. This is laughable and unbelievable as it is based on an english translation of the Bible. The Hebrew makes no distinction whatsoever. All letters in the Hebrew masoretic text are in the same case. I'm like Victor Meldrew now, I just don't believe it!!!!
Ponderer: to impress your friends - in hebrew they are pronounced adam (ah-DAHM) and chava (that's the gutteral H - sounds like clearing your throat - and then AH-va). Chava kinda means life, in the same way that someone's last name "Johnson" may have originally meant "son of John", but the true word for life is Chai (also gutteral "ch" as above - not like the drink).
