In sixty years in the 18th and 19th centuries Britain also caused the transportation of, on average, 2.500 Irish each year to New South Wales. They were convicted for such crimes as stealing a goose, looking suspicious, catching a salmon, or shooting a pheasant. I have little doubt that your own people whom you describe as scum were convicted and transported for similar offences.

We transported convicts to Oz after the American revolution (so we couldn't send them there any more!). If you want a really good read about the whole situation from start to finish, I recommend 'The Fatal Shore' by Robert Hughes. Its a big book, so try your local library to save buying it.
