who was better drake or nelson??????

who was better, generaly as a person (nelson had an affair) or in there carreer success (nelson got a higher title but was he born with it idk) arguement starts . . . . now!!!

please give evidence cos i wanna know why people think what they think.

Sir Francis Drake lived in an age of discovery working with the still held belief that the world was flat, yet he still went out into the unknown, Nelson had a proper map so it was easier.

Who is making the judgement? eg in the 1500's it was thought 'better' in England to raid Spanish trading ships. The people were who they were and all we can do with justice is accept the facts and acknowledge the biases.

I preferred Drake's sense of humour to Nelson's, but I suppose 27 years confined will take the edge off you.

Drake was a licensed pirate supported by a complaisaint Queen who was happy to see Spain humbled for as long as her buccaneers could keep supplying her share of the booty. Nelson was a political loose cannon, but a superb officer who could motivate everybody from the cabin boy to his fellow captains.

Drake never comanded more than a handful of ships and seemed find that difficult. He continually argued with his fellow captains and even executed one. Nelson led entire fleets and was a superb strategist. His ability to out-guess his opponents and concoct innovative solutions to problems led directly or indirectly to victories at Copenhagen, Aboukir Bay and Trafalgar.

As a bowls player Drake gets my vote; on every other count it's Nelson!

i didnt know if nelson was born with his title and wiki was a bit confusing.

btw drake beet the armada and that was the end of it but nelson only won a battle which didnt end the war,

p.s. i gotta suport drake but i didnt wanna seem bias. cos i go to sea cadets and we got kinda houses like when your at school and the two are drake and nelson and we gotta prove to the leaders that are one is the best.

Drake was also an explorer who sailed around the world, as Dot says; Nelson is better known as a war hero.

Drake was only a subordinate to lord Howard of Effingham who was Admiral of England and commanded the fleet that beat the Armada, but he did have a "good press" which is why many people believe "he" beat the spanish, In fact according to one school of thought that he spent most of the battle seekin out ships which would help enrich him personally and not necessarily help win the battle, in short he was just a pirate with good connections. Nelson on the other served from the age of 12yrs and the wealth and honours he gained came as a result of his success in the service of his country not through actively seeking it

i have got something against nelson that shows he was an idiot: if he hadn't of gone prancing around on the main deck in all his posh outfit looking like a human target he wouldn't have got shot with a musket ball and wudn't of died.

Drake has been described as a "ruthless, arrogant, self-willed, covetous, money-minded, and amoral" man. He was also labelled a bully and sociopath. But of course he did it for England (or himself) and for Buckfast.

Nelson won three of the most decisive naval victories in British history at the Nile (1798), Copenhagen (1801) and Trafalgar, and he was seriously wounded four times in the process. He always led from the front - even, at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797, personally leading the British boarding parties that captured two Spanish battleships in ferocious hand-to-hand fighting. If the Victoria Cross had been in existence in his lifetime, he would have qualified for it on at least three occasions. At news of his death, nmay of his men broke down and cried, an indication of the admiration, respect and compassion they shared with him.

Nelson was not born with any title. His great great uncle was Robert Walpole, thats all.

So, Nelson in my eyes, was the better man.

I'm afraid in my opinion it's Nelson first with Drake not even in the race. As octavius says Drake was a pretty nasty piece of work, Nelson on the otherhand was a great leader loved and admired not only by the men who served under him but by the public at large (unless they were French that is)

great. drakes stuffed. we got no chance of winning the debate but it was worth a try.

can any1 think of how drake was better in any way, morally as a person or somehow in battle or anything cos i gota take his side but i would have picked nelson if i could. or if you havent got anything good on drake something bad on nleson or soemthing that made it easier for him to make him lazy pleaaaasssssseeeeeeee.

Probably the worst thing you can say about Nelson was that he left his wife and conducted a very public affair with another mans' wife but as the husband knew about it and remained a friend of Nelson it hardly counts as a bad thing,( unless you were the abandoned wife that is). In fact I've often thought that this was one of the thing that helped make him so popular, as despite his rank and honours he still had the same problems in his life that the normal everyday people had
