How did World War 2 soldiers care for their new tattoos during wartime fighting? What did they use, if anything, to keep them clean and supple?

sorry...lol.....but i guess they had some antiseptic cream and even in the 40s i think they had vaseline to use......

I'm not sure what they used, but if they became ill because of the tattoo, ( or sunburn for that matter ).
Then they would be on a charge for damaging government property.

as an ex soldier,they didnt puy anything on them,remember these were the times when men were men and some of the women were men.If you got an infection from a tatoo even today you could be put on a charge for self inflicted wounds.
