From the Old English lifer plus pol meaning "Pool with muddy water" (I'm being serious, by the way). By 1190 it was Liuerpol.
yeah I agree with indie pools with muddy water were pretty common in oop t'North. They were also called dark or muddy and in Birmingham the area called Dogpool was originally dark - pool.
That does make sense actually- Blackpool too ?
And Dublin. Dubh Linn - Black Lake.
yes being a Blackpudlian i agree, the north west of england was very marshy, boggy and down right dirty throughout history.
