why does AA fire explode in midair? is it manufactured to? or is it set to on the weapon firing it?

A long time since I was in the forces, Artillery, I was never on Ack Ack, but it is, as you surmise, manufactured that way, bit like a timer, its set to go off at different heights, set beforehand.
