driving passed a farm, there was a gate, were dead rats haning off it! could someone tell me why.

It's an Old Tradition by Farmers to most likely Hang out Dead Rats to show passers by that there is a Farmer residing there, sometimes to Warn others not to walk on their Fields.
It's rarely used these days, but still used by more Traditional Farmers, nothing Mythological or Legendary about it, just an odd Tradition.
