If you live near Southampton, Portsmouth or around there be aware there is a D Day rememberance weekend on 27th & 28th June 2009

It is in the Lepe Country Park

The coastline near there was used to build some of the things used on D Day (like the floating harbour) and there are still remains of some of the buildings and foundations built and used leading up to D Day.

Here are some pictursof the remains

Those pictures look so empty and desolate don't they? As if to illustrate the fact that most of the people bustling around those sites on June 6th, 1944 are mostly gone and somewhat forgotten.
My dad, who was a London boy, was in the REs during the war. After serving in North Africa under Montgomery, he came to Cadland Park which partly bordered Lepe Beach. His job was to waterproof some of the many vehicles, tanks and lorries etc., that we going to be used on the DDay landings. The vehicles were parked on the road leading down toLepe. under the trees. Even now the road is very wide in places,
He loved the country side round there, that when the war was over, he found a job in Hythe, just up the road from Lepe, and we all moved down there. Often still go to Lepe, have a cuppa in the cafe there, walk along the beach and look over to the Isle of Wight.

Dad died many years ago.

Thanks for the nice story.

Add a human touch to the rather sad remains in the area.
