"Tom Bowling" is the fictional subject of a famous song, immensely popular with sailors of the day, written by Charles Dibdin in 1789. The tune is still remembered because it is played at the Last Night of the Proms every year, as part of the Fantasia on British Sea Songs. The opening lines are "Here, a sheer hulk,lies Tom Bowling : The darling of our crew" (!)
