what did the south mean by "Redemption" during Reconstruction? How was this accomplished?

Southerners werre required to swear an oath of allegiance to the United States before they were allowed to hold public office, or join the military, during the reconstruction period. Many ex-confederates refused to do this.

Those who did, were considered to be 'redeemed'.
