its a bit of a general question really, being broad id say some were proud to fight, and some became disillusioned.  try reading some war poetry, it gives a great insight into the minds of some soldiers.  one of the most famous poets is wilfred owen, whose most famous poem is dulce et decorum est (it is sweet and right) http://www.warpoetry.co.uk/owen1.html
