What was the actual reason that the English did not furcate the Indian sub-continent into many more smaller states before leaving? Was it the goodness of their heart, was it Lord and Lady Mountbatten's good relationship with Nehru, was it because of the so called 'iron man' Vallabhai Patel or because of Mahatma Gandhi?

Lots of info on Google.

During separation in 1947 was to give Muslims their own state, hence Pakistan was founded under Premier Jinna.

India's Hindu population remained under Premier Nehru.
they had spent a great deal of time uniting a lot of smaller states into one big one; they probably saw no reason to turn back history. Muslims demanded a separate state. I don't know that anyone else did.
