Is This Man A Good Pick For Secretary Of...

Having watched a few documentaries about the moon landing and the 'so called' evidence to prove that the american's faked it, ie: the waving flag and the identical rock layout at different locations on the moon, just interested to see what your views are?

The race to get to the moon was an intense one and you could understand if the moon landing was a fake as to why it was done. I believe at the time the race was between USA and Soviet Union (although I could be wrong) and if the Soviet Union had won it would have changed the face of who is percieved as the world's science leader this would have put an immense amount of pressure on the USA and of course they had everything to lose and the Soviet Union had everything to gain... and of course the Americans don't like to lose, do they?
sorry Becks, they have been back. I think there were 5 or 6 more trips to the moon with a total of 12 men having walked on the moon.
The Russians have also sent craft there, (they actually got an unmanned craft to the moon before the Americans did) including at least a couple of remote controlled vehicles that between them have explored several thousand square kilometers of the surface.
If this was all made up to trick the Russians then they must be in on it as well.
Incidentally, earlier this year, Bush announced he wanted to put more men on the moon, almost certainly using some Russian technology & possibly including one or more cosmonauts.
vaguely related:
the americans spent millions of dollars developing some kind of pen that could write in zero gravity.
the russians used a pencil.
and yes it was USA vs USSR, it was during the cold war so it was all about scaring the other guy - "we can get someone on the moon so our technology is better than yours so we'll kick your arse if it comes to all-out war" is basically why the space race & arms race were going on
Ok this is an old chestnut and one I have studied for a few years now......There are numerous reason for and against men landing on the moon and I could probably take up about 20 postings just beginning to detail all the in's and out's.
The basic scientific thrust against (the following are provable facts and NOT opinion).....all photos supposedly taken on the moon using the hassleblad cameras have marks on them which were etched onto the lenses...in some of the photographs these lines disappear behind rocks and other objects...this should be impossible.
Various space probes including ones sent up by the russians which dropped the first flag on the moon measured the solar radiation which the human body would be subject to on a trip to the moon....The russians estimated that at least 2 foot of lead sheilding would be needed to maintain safety....even all the later shuttle missions and the Mir space station all stay within the Van Allen radiation belt.
If you google for Gus Grissom you'll find another raft of conspiracy theories as well for astronauts dying in suspicious circumstances......and as for the russians blowing the whistle......how could they if they didn't and never had the technology to go to the moon? Or if they did why didn't they?
As for the Laser reflector this could indeed have been deposited by a remote craft.....as for going to the moon not being that hard to do...well how come we ain't going there for the bank holiday these days then?

Actually, this is not impossible. In fact it's quite common for black crosshairs to be 'washed out' by bright objects. Click here for a perfect example of partial and complete crosshair washout against white clouds:
(Besides, why would these cameras behave differently in a secret pretend-moon location on Earth than on the Moon?)

A while ago I googled a bit on this subject, and the figures which came back were that the Van Allen radiation belts take about an hour to get through, and in that time the amount of radiation getting into a person would be 1 or 2 thingies, and the amount needed to kill someone would be about 300 thingies. A different source said 100 thingies. I can't be bothered to google again to find the exact figures, but the gist of it was that even if a man goes through the VA belt several times, he would only get enough radiation to increase his risk of cancer but nowhere near enough to kill or seriously harm him in the short term.
All of the conspiracy theories about (not) going to the Moon are easily debunkable through a few minutes of basic googling.
I'm with ll_billym on this, it's not a particularly hard thing to do.
So if you're asking why we're not both of to the moon for the bank holiday, sft42, well, I'm a bit short of cash since I'm not the most powerful person (or even nation) on Earth with a multi-billion dollar budget.
Besides, ll_billym and I are going to Clacton like everyone else.
