Check whether there are any differences in the law between Scotland and the rest of the UK (I assume that you are in the UK).

The general law is you must have permission to use a metal detector on private land, and then with this given anything found must be shown to the owner. Farmer's etc. are usually pretty good about letting you keep your finds.
Don't even think of digging on land belonging to the National Trust......
