Does anybody know what a "swish hand" is or what they did for a living? Currently researching a family tree and this is the given employment of an ancestor.

I have looked for ages but as yet can't find anything close.

Nope can't find anything, perhaps it is a description of what they did more than a job title.  They may have been involved in the silk industry, or they might have been someone holding a whip for horses or in workhouses, or places of disrepute!

It would be useful if you could say where (in the country) the person was working. I can then try for you.

Also when and from what document does the reference come?

Are you sure its definatly 'swish hand.' Old documents are written in freehand which often makes them hard to decipher. Is it definatly not 'stage hand' or something similar?
