DCNS

I have been reading Winston Churchill's first volume of; Second World War. He sent copies of his letters to DCNS. Does anybody know who DCNS was? DCNS as it exists now in France, was then called DCN and this book was edited in 1950, so was DCNS this same company or something else?

it was the French Naval Supply company then and after it changed from DCN to DCNS

Thank you dot, but why in his book are his letters copied to DCNS and not just DCN? DCNS only exists since 2007...

Does it not mention anything in the foreward?

Whilst I am loathe to contradict dot's usually excellent knowledge,I think you will find that the initials DCNS stand for Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff.

Hi MrV, I was answering the bit about the french company, It makes sense that he would send copies of letters to the various Chiefs of staff, not sure who the deputy was but the wartime First Sea Lord died in 1943 so maybe it was his deputy.

Thank you Mr Veritas, that seems to be the answer. I'm still looking to see who was DCNS in 1939, any ideas?

Up to December 1939 it was Rear-Admiral T. S. V. PHILLIPS. Vice-Admiral A Cunningham then took over.

Ah thanks for that Heathfield, saves me having to re-read sections of his book to see if the names were mentioned.
