Have just read "Annals of Imperial Rome" by Tacitus. In the account of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, there is no mention of the goings on in Judea, ie Jesus, Herod, Pilate and the Jews kicking off all the time. Why not ? Did the Romans really think so little of this outpost of their Empire that Tacitus didn't think all that carry on worth a mention ? Granted they did have serious problems with the Germans, Armenians various Italians and the Emporer's increasing insanity at the same time but still......

The jews didnt kick off bigtime until 76 ad, well after the claudian dynasty fell. As for Jesus he was one heretic jew amongst many many others. Herod didnt cause as much problems as his grand nephew (or was it nephew) Herod Agrippa, who does, I think get a mention. Pilate gets a mention in Suetonius, and also in tacitus, I think for his heroic defence of the right to separate worship of the jews in the face of Caligula's insanity. Tiberius's insanity wasnt the problem, it was the viciously depraved corruption of Sejanus and Macro that held rome transfixed. A minor prophet in a relatively peaceful province with good tax returns wouldn't register. There wasnt much carry-on you see.
