Do you mean an itinerant gunsmith who travelled around the country trading and repairing guns by appointment or a gunsmith with a permanent place of business that relied on trade coming to his establishment?

Hmm... Not sure. I think for the sake of this I'll say one with a permanent place of business. I'm thinking of Edinburgh in particular I that's any help.

But just so out of curiosity, how much could an itinerant one have earned as well? Just roughly of course.

Thanks!
I suppose it would depend if he was any good at it. ;-))
Everton is correct. If a craftsman was no good he would simply not attract any work.in towns run by guilds, the gunmakers guild would quality assure work. However the approach of mechanisation and standardised machined parts affected production of guns in the 19th century and I assume in the wake of this hand-crafted guns would have waned. So it depends on what part of the long Victorian ea you are interested in.I think you need to have a dialogue with the Royal Armouries Museum staff, either London or Leeds.
