For family research purposes I need to find my Grandfathers National Insurance number. Does anyone know where I would start to look.

how long ago did he live? when did he die? I think the NI numbers only came in after the war so perhaps he didn't have one?
No I think the grandad probably did have an NI number Hame, One of my contemporaries is a great grandad, and I'm only 50!
The Inland Revenue has everyones National Insurance number on the new System from 1970 even when someone dies it stays on for 25years i was told,the address is Newcastle upon Tyne,but they wont give it to you because of Data Protection.
