Oil paint in tin skinning over

I have a large tin of (expensive) oil paint, now half empty, and finished with for a while. Apart from the messy business of transferring it to a smaller container, is there a way to stop it from skinning over, would a disc of polythene on the surface be of any use ?

Tip the tin upside down and shake a couple of times to seal the lid, and when next used remove top carefully, should be fine, with no skin on the top

The best way is to store the tin upside down, the skin then forms on the bottom

Why not try a piece of cling film carefully placed on top, making sure it goes all round the edges to keep the air out (like you do to stop skin forming on custard). When you take the cling film off, any skin will be on the cling film.

I'd endorse the Winner's way, and you can put the cling film on each time you close the lid.

Vulcan has the best answer. I do this all the time with oil based paints and it always works.
