My skirting board on the side of the chimney breast has gone black & sticky!!!!! Anyone any ideas what has happened will get it sorted this week but I cannnot understand why Many thanks

Might be mould. Is it in a cold corner?

I agree, Brucie........... probably mould. Recesses down at floor level are an easy target for mould development....... warm air rises, so cold, damp air with no circulation.
