Nice idea Phleb, especially if you get the kids involved in the painting as well ;o)
A good rub down with sandpaper or a wire brush to remove any loose bits, and provide a good "key" for the paint.
Undercoat next. Colour will depend on what the final colour will be. Maybe a mid-grey for a compromise. Plain white u/c if you don't have any other.

Any good exterior paint, such as "Weathershield" gloss. I've never heard of it in test pots though. Maybe another brand would have them.

With different colours, you won't need much paint for each. It could be quite expensive.
Think about going to Halford's and looking at car colours in aerosols. A lot easier to apply as well.
Don't let the kids spray each other though ;o)

The builder, Thank you. I am quite looking forward to this new little project. I'll look into the weathershield paints, may just stick to 2 colours depending on price range. Do i have to undercoat it? also could i just use gloss?
Oh yes. The undercoat is the most important coat. The gloss just gives the colour and the weatherproofing :o)
