I have a small brick lean-to which has asbestos insulating board fixed on battens under the roof tiles. Is it feasible, and indeed advisable, to enclose these with a second suspended ceiling to make the problem 'go away'? I'm shuddering to think how many thousands a removal firm will want.

Probably "Asbestolux", Moses. Its use was banned in the early 80s. Although a hazard due to its asbestos content, it's not one of the worst types. Well Ratty I'm thinking of that and also if it decides to start disintegrating it will be best to have a means of trapping it all up there.
the lungs don't breathe :-)

Thing is jomifl there's plenty of advise on sealing them. I'd like to do that but also go one step further. No intention of ever letting the lungs breathe anything from them.

Yes, specialist firms will turn up with space-age suits and mobile showers etc. They'll make a big deal of it. It's their business. Gross over-reaction of course. With suitable clothing and precautions, it's quite possible to remove it safely.

Otherwise, certainly seal it up. it really is quite stable if undisturbed. I would incorporate a "vapour check" between the old and new ceilings. (Ordinary polythene.)

The only tricky part will be fixing new joists without knocking the old board around. I would suggest fixing joists to the walls, independent of the existing ceiling.

What are the rough dimensions of the shed?
Before doing anything else such as the builders suggestions, I would seal all the joints and edges with acrylic sealant whilst wearing a decent dust mask.

Thanks folks! Not exact measurement but the shed is about 2.5 x 3.5 metres footprint.
In the meantime I have contacted the local council who have said I can take it to the tip in special bags! Shurely shome mishtake?

I think the advice sheet refers to asbestos cement Ratty, but ta muchly
Yes, that's what I thought Mose. Special bags. I think they have a skip for that.
It's low grade stuff.
