Treated Fence Panels - Painting

Hi, I spoke to a fencer and he said new treated fence panels should be fitted and left to 'weather' to a grey colour before being painted or treated again, does anyone know why this is ? I have a bunch of new panels to fit and I want to spray them before I fit them.

I think it's to let the wood dry out.

I suspect (and I'm no expert) that letting the wood weather to a grey colour means that the antirot treatment that the panel makers put on will have worn away. If you try to paint new panels, the paint might not 'take', because the antirot is spoiling your efforts.

Booky, that sounds spot on as I thought it was just that the green fence paint was old, it hasn't taken to the panel well at all !! Thanks

I've never understood why anybody paints fence panels a different colour.
