I have at last,found a table lamp I like but the bulbs it recommends to use are 42W eco halogen ,http://www.next.co.uk/x531170s8#874220X53

as you can see the fitting is same as an ordinary pin one,could I not use a normal bulb in it?

Yes you could use an ordinary incandesant buld
Yes you can. I believe the 42 watt eco lamp is equivalent to a 60 watt normal bulb.
