Fitted Wardrobes
4 Answers
The fitted wardrobes in my house were here when we moved in 22 years ago and are really tatty. I would like to remove them and replace them with freestanding furniture. The wardrobes have lights over the bed (not all of them working!) and I'm not sure how to dismantle the wardrobes safely. Any ideas would be welcomed! TIA

Turn off the electricity, undo the screws to screwed when building them, removng a bit at a time. Put the electrics to one side as you come across then, disconnecting from the juice supply as you go. Where you glued things up you will probably have to bash them apart. Slowly but surely.

A bit of tracing needed first. Try to find where the supply cable comes from. If it's a plug & socket, that's easy. It may well be a fused spur. Againg, easy enough to disconnect.
It's possible that a supply is taken from the lighting circuit, maybe via a junction box. If so, unless you;re familiar with circuits, you may well feel safer calling someone in. A very simple and quick job usually.
OG's right. There may well be some destruction if the assembly fixings aren't readily apparent. With built-in units, you also may find that a certain amount of re-plastering or patching is necessary.
Have you considered just upgrading the doors and internal fittings?
