I've used Johnstone's floor paint (oil based) to paint wooden front door step. I prepped by scraping and sanding, then filling. Both times the black paint has within a few months cracked and peeled. Do you think I should have applied first coat well thinned with white spirit? Any advice from painters?

Probably due to expansion and contraction caused by changing weather conditions, for which a floor paint ( concrete etc) was not designed.

Derek, the paint is supposed to be good for wood and for doorsteps. I'm not sure how to overcome my problem. Probably best to get onto Johnstones rather than come here. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks Brainiac. I think it's not ok for applying on a wooden step.
