As above, how user friendly are home treatments? i'm concerned as we have to treat some timbers on our staircase and are hoping that it isn't too toxic to live with - any ideas?

All ihad to do was dilute it with water and spray the solution on with a garden sprayer - its as simple as that - no lasting smell.
Use the usual protection when spraying - goggles facemask overalls.

The wood treated was in an attic - gave it a good soaking with the liquid and took a few days to dry - that will depend on the ambient temperature - will dry quicker in summer.
The stuff I used is the same stuuff companys that treat woodworm professionally use and they give a 25yr guarantee with it against re-infestation.
If you have your doubts about using it give them a ring and ask them for a quote - it might be an idea to get the rest of the house checked out as well as the blighters spread like wildfire - to get my attic done wouod have cost me approx 100.

Thanks again - we needed an immediate solution so used what we could get. It sank in very easily, but is not dry yet. It was in a confined space under the stairs which had been blocked off by a piece of large furniture for about 50 years!! To compound matters the concrete floor had also deteriorated and needed to be sealed. Along with a bit of gloss painting, you can imagine the smell, and it will be a while before we can use the space for storage. It should all be worth it in the end though.
