I have recently been advised that my combi boiler (Alpha 280E) which is starting to play up, is probably near the end of its life and I should consider a replacement......not sure if this is really the case - it is only 9 years old. Anyone got views or knowledge I would be really grateful - it seems the circuit board is beginning to 'go', and I can get it to fire up by giving it a judicious tap in the right spot, but this is far from Ideal and I am conderned that maybe the boiler is not safe anymore....?

It will fail 'safe' so its 'playing up' is more a case of the inconvenience it causes you. Mechanically many boilers last say 15 years, but more complex electronics seems to be making them less reliable as they get older. Bit like modern cars really - its the electrics that really foul you up.
