Putting green fence stain over creosote

Has anybody tried to put a green fence stain over a fairly newly creosoted fence? Did it work, or did the oil in the creosote prevent the new stain from adhering?

You will have a problem with it adhering. The other problem will be the creosote 'bleeding' through the stain you are putting on, especially if it's water-based.

If the fence isn't too big experiment with a hot air gun, might just break the oil, in the creosote, down.
Creosote will degrade in time.

Thanks for your suggestions. We have now applied a green Cuprinol oil based protection which suggested it would be compatible and the result is a dreadful peacock green /blue/ brown streaky mess.

Wish we'd left the darned fence alone. Guess we'll now have to live with it for years until it weathers and fades.
