my husband is boarding the bathroom floor and has moved the toilet slightly whilst working, this has resulted in a putty type substance falling off where it is sealing a fitting. Does any one know what this substance putty? is and how can we disconnec t the loo?

Putty sounds like 'plummers mate'. It's a non-setting waterproof putty that you can buy in any builder's merchant or DIY shed.
Disconnecting the loo is fairly straight forward and the method can vary slightly, depending on the style of toilet you have. Does the cistern sit on top of the pan, or is it seperate?

It's a close coupled toilet and the water leaks from a screw underneath whenever you flush the toilet. The screw can't be undone at the moment it seems to be stuck ,rusty I think . Any ideas please..HELP.
There's typically a large rubber doughnut sealing the void between the loo and the close coupled cisteren above it - and as you say, two screwthreads, with typically wingnuts to undo the separate the two sections. Large dose of penetrating oil overnight perhaps? If he has to saw through, these parts should be replaceable (std size) - check at a plumbers merchant first.

Thanks for the answers .We had to saw through the bolts . Have managed to replace them and replace washers, have used plumbers mait to seal any possible leaks and now have a fully functioning toilet. MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL.

Make sure you turn off your water supply via a fitted service valve or your mains! before disconnecting the toilet
