Phoned up and was advised to simply switch off the power and remove plug from socket and leave for a while (I think he said 30 minutes but I left it a few hours) Plugged back in and have had no repeat of problem since.

Only other thing I can think of is that the door would possibly stay locked if the water was not fully pumped out from the machine, either due to partially blocked drain hose or gunged up or faulty pump.

some washing machines have a cord fixed behind the filter flap door that will open the door if pulled. Is the machine full of water, if so disconect the waste pipe and drain the water into a bucket, this may let the door open if switched back on.
Last resort use a thin flat bladed screwdriver, a blunt ended one of possible to get round the seal by the lock, you may be able to release the door
