leaky bath mixer tap

I am a competent D I Y 'er but I am stuck on this problem, my bath is fitted with some really nice taps and I would like to keep them, problem is when I pull up the central part of the tap to divert the water to the shower head a lot of the hot and cold continues to come out of the tap instead of the shower head, I naturally assume that there is a washer in there but I can't see how to access it, there is a nut shape to to the central spigot but I tried to turn this without sucess, should I put a bit more strength into trying to turn it ?

You need a minimum water pressure to properly divert the water from taps to shower, otherwise your diverter will not be kept up in place. So, check your water pressure coming through your taps - is it forceful enough?
If it is, then check that your shower head and/or pipe aren't blocked in any way. Try it on another tap unit?
Finally, do you you've been trying but do it harder! Perhaps get a friend to push back in the opposite direction on the taps so that they don't rotate with your spanner!
