does anyone know how to remove hardened grout which has been left on stone tiles please?

Try a 50/50 mix of warm water and common white vinegar...

Use a dishwashing sponge with the "scratcher" backing to apply the vinegar andscrub... You may have to apply a few times for effective cleaning....
If you mean the dried residue that is left when you wipe the new grout over with a wet sponge, Wickes sell a liquid that can remove it. Never tried the Vinegar but it's supposed to be wonderful at so many things so could well work.
