What is the type of wood stocked by builders merchants and used for joists, rafters and general construction in the UK. My belief is that it's Douglas Fir but just want some confirmation/other's people's views.

It varies. Douglas Fir is one possible source. Others are Western Hemlock, Corsican Pine, Canadian Spruce and Western White Spruce.

I've used Douglas Fir and the Canadian Spruce. Are you undertaking a big job?
